London; November 2005 – Kaiser Chiefs producer Stephen Street and engineer/producer Cenzo Townshend have chosen the Audient ASP8024 as the recording console at the heart of their new mobile studio facility Electric Landlady which has been used to record New Order’s latest project.
'The beauty of our ‘mobile studio’ is that it’s a world-class recording facility that can be anywhere that the client wants to be,' explains Townshend. 'Electric Landlady is a new venture for us, a mobile facility like this being the only one of its kind and a very exciting alternative to the conventional studio.'
Townshend’s relationship with Audient began when he purchased his original ASP8024 console for The Bunker, the recording studio based at Olympic Studios, London. 'The Audient console at Olympic is a 48 channel and has so many great features. The bottom end on it is phenomenal, and it also has a very nice sounding EQ that I can’t seem to replicate with anything else. Investing in the 36-channel ASP8024 for Electric Landlady meant that we didn’t have to compromise at all on quality, and yet it comes in a smaller package, which is much more suited to fitting inside various locations.'
Street and Townshend recorded and mixed eight songs with New Order, four for their latest CD Waiting for the Siren’s Call. 'When working with New Order, we set up the portable studio in Jane Seymour’s house near Bath. The band in the ballroom and the control room in the library – a beautiful book-lined room with lots of natural light,' Townshend continues.
The Beautiful South booked the mobile studio in November to record their new album with producer Ian Stanley. In the meantime Street and Townshend will be recording the new Zutons album in The Bunker, further adding to their already star-studded CV, having worked with big names such as Razorlight, Blur guitarist Graham Coxon and Ordinary Boys.
Alongside the Audient, the outboard in the mobile studio includes Neve, Pultec, API, Urei and Telefunken.
