SUMO: Improving Paradise at Edensound Mastering

Edensound

Melbourne, Australia, March 2006 – Edensound Mastering has recently invested in Audient’s High Resolution Summing Amplifier, SUMO, to add to its already impressive arsenal of world class equipment.

Edensound owner, English-born studio engineer Martin Pullan explains how SUMO works for him: 'It is as quiet as a mouse and has an amazing 27dB of headroom so you’re never going to overload it. It’s just like a mixing desk but without using anywhere near as much real estate.'

'A lot more mixes are being done in the home studio environment, so engineers bring in 'stems' or components of mixes. This gives greater flexibility during the mastering and also means that they can be ‘mixed’ in an analogue summing amplifier, avoiding the undesirable effect of digital summing in the software mixer.

'In my opinion, although analogue editing is essentially dead, processing in the analogue domain is the way to go. Apart from the fact that it sounds better, the user interface is much more fun to use.'

Pullan continues, 'The other thing I love about SUMO is that it includes the bus compressor/limiter from the Audient ASP8024; that has to be one of the best I’ve heard.'

Based in the acclaimed Studio One at Metropolis Melbourne, Edensound is the studio of choice for three recent ARIA (Australian Record Industry Association) number one hits and four platinum records including Shannon Noll’s album ‘Lift’.

Audient’s SUMO features include eight fully balanced stereo inputs with >24dB headroom; a mono function for channels 1/2 and 3/4; fully balanced analogue stereo outputs plus optional AES/SPDIF digital outputs at up to 192kHz. The unit also incorporates Audient’s highly praised ASP8024 stereo bus compressor.
